504 Plans

Poteet ISD is committed to ensuring that all students, regardless of disability, have equal access to a quality education. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a federal civil rights law that guarantees support and accommodations for students with disabilities, enabling them to succeed academically alongside their peers.

What is a 504 Plan?
A 504 Plan outlines the accommodations and modifications a student with a disability needs to participate fully in the classroom and school activities. These accommodations help remove barriers to learning, ensuring students can access the same educational opportunities as their peers.

Eligibility for a 504 Plan:
Students with physical or mental impairments that substantially limit one or more major life activities, such as learning, reading, or concentrating, may qualify for a 504 Plan. Each plan is personalized based on the student’s specific needs, and accommodations are determined by a team that includes parents, teachers, and school administrators.

Examples of 504 Accommodations:

  • Preferential seating
  • Extended time on tests and assignments
  • Modified assignments or curriculum
  • Use of assistive technology
  • Breaks during instruction for focus or sensory needs

How to Request a 504 Evaluation:
If you believe your child may benefit from a 504 Plan, please contact our 504 Coordinator to discuss evaluation options. We are here to work with families to ensure every student has the resources they need to thrive.

For more information or to begin the evaluation process, please reach out to the Poteet ISD Special Programs Department at 830-276-8767.
